"The False Prince" Book Review

Amazon.com: The False Prince (The Ascendance Series, Book 1): 9780545284141: Nielsen, Jennifer A.: Books

It's clean, it's twisty, it has one clever protagonist...this book has it all.

Book Synopsis:

THE FALSE PRINCE is the thrilling first book in a brand-new trilogy filled with danger and deceit and hidden identities that will have readers rushing breathlessly to the end. In a discontent kingdom, civil war is brewing. To unify the divided people, Conner, a nobleman of the court, devises a cunning plan to find an impersonator of the king’s long-lost son and install him as a puppet prince. Four orphans are recruited to compete for the role, including a defiant boy named Sage. Sage knows that Conner’s motives are more than questionable, yet his life balances on a sword’s point — he must be chosen to play the prince or he will certainly be killed. But Sage’s rivals have their own agendas as well.

As Sage moves from a rundown orphanage to Conner’s sumptuous palace, layer upon layer of treachery and deceit unfold, until finally, a truth is revealed that, in the end, may very well prove more dangerous than all of the lies taken together.

Oh my goodness....a book I actually finished? Yeah. It's true. This book really surprised me.... I had thought about "all" the possible case scenarios, and Nielsen put a plot twist in there that was absolutely epic. WOW.

Let's talkabout some things.

1) Sage. Just. "Ahhh" the kid had me hooked from the beginning, with his snarkiness, and cleverness, and really so many things I never saw coming.  This is one protagonist that you're gonna love.

Some parents may want to know that Sage does, have a little bit of "sass" so if that's not your thing, maybe skip this one.

2) The plot twist.

There was one huge twist at the end, and gosh, it was just so unexpected! I don't think you'll guess this one.

3) It's clean.

Me over here wondering why this is a YA book?!?

4) The dialogue.

I could listen (haha) to these characters talk to each other all day.

Content Review:

Sex/ Romance: One cheek kiss, and Sage tucks a piece of hair behind Imogen's ear which was more playful than romantic. A princess talks about growing to love a prince.

Violence: A young boy is killed. Sage is beaten numerous times and thrown in a dungeon. A character cuts another with a knife. One character is killed and falls into a river. Sword fighting. Talk of death. Characters are forced to do things against their wills.

Language: None.

Though slightly slow in places, this book was a family friendly, and quick read...one for the guys.
