"A Week Away" Movie Review

Netflix Nabs 'A Week Away' Starring Bailee Madison & Sherri Shepherd – Deadline

This "faith based" Netflix film is good, but falls short of great. Let's see why:

With nowhere left to go, Will Hawkins finds himself at camp for the first time. His instinct is to run, but he finds a friend, a father figure, and even a girl who awakens his heart. Most of all, he finally finds a home.

First off...this is "faith based" musical. It has catchy songs (though not all theologically accurate, but I still enjoyed). I did love the "Awesome God/ God Only Knows" mashup. It was absolutely beautiful. Together, both of these songs are extraordinary. Here's the link to check it out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_xEDCg-9lIw

Secondly...this movie is a romance between two teens. (MaJoR instalove) This is more of subplot, but it's there. There is some flirting, hand holding, and one kiss between two of the main characters.

Thirdly, this is an inspirational film. It's message is about being positive about yourself, and knowing that "you're more than good enough." Check out the song here: (cringeworthy) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BurmscPudMw.  If we were good enough, Jesus wouldn't have had to come in the first place. A Christian movie should be about Christ and the Gospel, and this was not found in this film.

Yeah....it's supposed to be a Christian musical but it's like...not.

There were so many times where the characters could a talked about the Gospel, and Christianity, and that never happened like I'd hoped. Jesus's name isn't even mentioned, nor prayer.

The songs are just fun tunes about self with a mention of God here and there to make it "Christian."

Content:

Romance/ Sex: Cleannnn! One kiss the whole movie, some brief, mild hand holding, and lingering looks. The characters who are in love do dance together, but there wasn't anything questionable about it.

Two other characters have a crush on one another, and express their feelings. Will says George has "creepy stalker vibes."

Some characters do wear revealing outfits including crop tops and cleavage bearing dresses. We see characters in swimsuits (no bikinis)

Violence: Paintball competition. One character sneaks into someone's office. {SPOILER} At the beginning of the movie, Will is being chased by the police for stealing a car.

Language: “sucks,” “jeez” and “gosh.”

This movie is enjoyable and and it was very clean. I would watch again, but not if I wanted to see something with faith based content.
